ChatGPToolkit for NYU Faculty

About A.I. Artificial Intelligence

At the beginning of 2023, the rise of generative AI tools like ChatGPT left NYU faculty concerned about the academic landscape. We wanted to offer faculty, and consequently students, opportunities to learn more about ChatGPT and its growing impact on research, scholarship, and academia. Through our design, we hoped to foster strategic discussions surrounding generative AI, as well as provide resources to help faculty make informed decisions regarding ChatGPT's integration within their instructional and assessment practices.

Research Process

We conducted research across NYU in February - March 2023 to understand our users' needs.

Surveys:

39 students

10 faculty members

Interviews:

2 subject matter experts

Based on our analysis, we realized NYU faculty need instructional guidance about how to handle ChatGPT in their classrooms. Specifically, our research indicated that

Faculty have gaps in knowledge about ChatGPT's functionality
A communication gap exists between students and faculty about use of the AI tool
Faculty are concerned about ChatGPT supplanting student writing

Learning Objectives

Goal:

NYU faculty will be able to make informed decisions about using ChatGPT in their instruction/assessment design.

Objectives:

NYU faculty will be able to explain what ChatGPT is and how it can be used for assignments.
NYU faculty will be able to facilitate open conversations with students about the use of ChatGPT in the classroom.
NYU faculty will be able to adapt their instruction/assessment materials with respect to ChatGPT.

Design Process

Based on the needs and motivations of our learners, we realized our design should be:

Asynchronous: faculty can access the resource on their own time and at their own pace
Convenient: faculty can access the online link via email from any location, making it easy to incorporate into their existing habits and behaviors
Modifiable: faculty can stay up-to-date on the ever-changing information around ChatGPT and other AI tools

We decided to create the ChatGPToolkit, a website hub for all things ChatGPT and generative AI.

In April 2023, we conducted 3 usability tests with NYU faculty members before iterating further:

Based on the results of our evaluations, we tweaked several aspects of our site. For example, we minimized the number of clicks required to reach various toolkit sections, deleting individual toolkit pages and instead only making the toolkit accessible from one central page. In doing so, it helped to improve the flow and functionality of the site for users.
